Fall in love with yourself again

The Myth
I · The Myth

Before Narcissus could walk, his mother asked the blind seer Tiresias whether the boy would live a long life. The seer gave one condition. Only if he never comes to know himself.

He grew into the most beautiful creature anyone had seen. Everyone wanted him and he wanted none of them. Echo loved him until nothing was left of her but a voice in the hills. Then one afternoon, kneeling at a pool no shepherd had ever touched, he met the face the whole world had been fighting over. He fell. He knew himself at last, and he chose himself over everything, and he never looked away again.

Where he fell, a flower grew.

The House
II · The House

They called me a narcissist. They meant it as a knife, and for a while I let it cut.

Then I read the myth again. A boy is warned that knowing himself will be the end of him. He looks anyway. Two thousand years and they are still telling that story as a tragedy.

The whole world is built to keep you from looking. Dress for them, work for them, want what they want, live for whoever is watching. Call it what it is. Propaganda. And the one word they keep as a weapon against anyone who steps out of line is the name of the boy who looked.

So I kept the word. I looked. I am not sorry and I am not looking away.

This house is for the ones who looked.
